"The Pearl Wars" by Nick James

Title: The Pearl Wars

Author: Nick James

Series: Skyship Academy #1

My rating: 5 of 5

(book read from August 6th to August 7th, 2012)

Summary:

A devastated Earth's last hope is found in Pearls: small, mysterious orbs that fall from space and are capable of supplying enough energy to power entire cities. Battling to control the Pearls are the Skyship dwellers - political dissidents who live in massive ships in the Earth's stratosphere - and the corrupt Surface government.

Jesse Fisher, a Skyship slacker, and Cassius Stevenson, a young Surface operative, cross paths when they both venture into forbidden territory in pursuit of Pearls. Their chance encounter triggers an unexpected reaction, endowing each boy with remarkable - and dangerous - abilities that their respective governments would stop at nothing to possess.

Enemies thrust together with a common goal, Jesse and Cassius make their way to the ruins of Seattle to uncover the truth about their new powers, the past they didn't know they shared, and a shocking secret about the Pearls.

My Thoughts on the Book:

OMG, where to start? I loved, loved, loved The Pearl Wars. Nick James has written one amazing YA sci-fi novel. Just so awesome.

The world-building was really good, done both through Jesse & Cassius' PoVs. And when everything was discovered in the end - so awesome, so yeah, great storyline, and I loved every second of it!

Also, this book was just full of action non-stop, and that was done great, so it was quite an adventure. Also, it was full of twists & turns, some I guessed, some I didn't, but they were all awesome. Yeah, it seems I'll use this word often in this review, but this book was full of awesomeness :)

I liked the characters, too. I really liked Jesse from the beginning, until the end I loved him as a character (he's awesome, too), as for Cassius, I started to feel sorry for him, poor Cassius, but he's a great character, too, and I really liked him, too, just so badass with his ability. Can't wait to see what will happen in the sequel! I liked the secondary characters, too: Avery, Eva, Skandar, Alkine - the only one I disliked a lot was Madame, yeah, I think she's such a manipulative (and a little bit crazy) bitch.

Anyway, I'm not talking about the story at all, because I'm barely managing not to go into too spoilerish details, but The Pearl Wars definitely joins my pile of all-time top favourite books.

So, if you enjoy sci-fi books full of action, adventure, mystery, lots of twists & turns and a great story, then this is a book for you. Actually, I highly recommend this book to everyone, it was that awesome!!!
