"House of Many Ways" by Diana Wynne Jones

Title: House of Many Ways

Author: Diana Wynne Jones

Series: Castle/Howl's Castle/Wizard's Castle, #3

My rating: 5 of 5

(Book read from April 10th to April 12th, 2013)

Summary:

Charmain Baker is in over her head. Looking after Great-Uncle William's tiny cottage while he's ill should have been easy. But Great-Uncle William is better known as the Royal Wizard Norland, and his house bends space and time. Its single door leads to any number of places - the bedrooms, the kitchen, the caves under the mountains, the past, and the Royal Mansion, to name just a few.

By opening that door, Charmain has become responsible for not only the house, but for an extremely magical stray dog, a muddled young apprentice wizard, and a box of the king's most treasured documents. She has encountered a terrifying beast called a lubbock, irritated a clan of small blue creatures, and wound up smack in the middle of an urgent search. The king and his daughter are desperate to find the lost, fabled Elfgift - so desperate that they've even called in an intimidating sorceress named Sophie to help. And where Sophie is, can the Wizard Howl and fire demon Calcifer be far behind?

Of course, with that magical family involved, there's bound to be chaos - and unexpected revelations.

No one will be more surprised than Charmain by what Howl and Sophie discover.

My Thoughts on the Book:

House of Many Ways is set a few years after Howl's Moving Castle & a couple of years after the events in Castle in the Air (Morgan then was only a baby, and now he's 2 years old). Although you don't have to have read Castle in the Air to read House of Many Ways, I think it's necessary for the reader to have read Howl's Moving Castle at least, because of all the background necessary for the characters of Sophie, Howl & Calcifer!
Anyway, in House of Many Ways we meet Charmain, our main character, who loves reading books, and doesn't really know how to do lots of ordinary things (it's her mom's fault). She's taking care of Wizard Norland's (a.k.a Great-Uncle William) house & his dog Waif while he's away, because he's ill. And what a house that one is, definitely a house of many ways, I would love to live in a house like that, who wouldn't? It might not be a moving castle (like Howl's), but it still rocked, and it was really amazing, and really magical!
Soon, Peter joins Charmain in the house (he wants to be an apprentice of Wizard Norland) and they both (with the little help of Waif) try to learn the ropes of the house. That was fun, even funny at times, poor Peter, he never seems to make any spell work, but surprisingly Charmain is quite good at magic, something she didn't know.
Although it took me a while to warm up to Charmain as a character, in the end I liked her a lot. Peter was an ok character, I liked him, too, and I have to admit I was surprised who he came up to be. I never would've guessed that when I met him, so there were some surprises in the story. I also absolutely adored Waif - such a cute & adorable little dog :) We also got to see again Jamal & his dog from Castle in the Air, and that was a lovely surprise.
And then there were Sophie, Calcifer, Howl & Morgan. Morgan was so adorable & such a sweet & lively child, and he made me smile so much :) Just what I would've imagined a child of Sophie & Howl to be! We all see a lot of Calcifer - I adore him as a character, too! He was awesome, and he kicked some ass :) And Sophie & Howl - I still loved them, definitely one of my fav couples ever, they never seem to stop banter with each other, and they're so sweet & fun & funny, and I laughed so much in this book. One thing I have to mention is that when Howl showed up for the first time in this book, I knew right away that it's him & I started laughing so much, I got tears in my eyes :D Only Howl can think of doing something like that. He was absolutely hilarious, yet totally adorable (I seem to be using a lot the word adorable today), and I absolutely loved every second of it :) If you loved Wizard Howl in Howl's Moving Castle, you must read this one!
The writing style as always was amazing, and totally unputdownable, and highly entertaining. I laugh even now just thinking of some of the scenes :) The story itself was quite fun, we meet lots of fun & interesting magical creatures, so it was quite imaginative & the world-buliding was done amazing, and the story itself was lovely & so, so funny, filled with magic, a good mystery, and quite a lot action. Although there weren't as many surprises as there were in the previous 2 books, and I mostly realised where the story was going, I still enjoyed the journey itself completely, and there were a few surprises that I totally didn't saw them coming, especially why Wizard Norland was ill & what the Elfgift is.
I highly recommend House of Many Ways, as well as all the books in the series! I love that they're suitable for all ages, and I would've loved to read these as a child. Also, I am sad a little that this is the last book in the series, and I won't get any more glimpses of all of these amazing characters I've met in these 3 books, but there's always re-reading, and I know I will never get enough of these characters, these stories & the world itself Diana Wynne Jones has created.
As for you, if you still haven't tried the series, what are you waiting for? Especially if you love fantasy books filled with magic and a fairy-tale-like wibe through the stories, and that are highly entertaining, and have lots of twists & turns, then these books are a must-read for you & I can't recommend them enough!

"Castle in the Air" by Diana Wynne Jones

Title: Castle in the Air

Author: Diana Wynne Jones

Series: Castle/Howl's Castle/Wizard's Castle, #2

My rating: 5 of 5

(Book read on April 9th, 2013)

Summary:

Young merchant Abdullah leads a humble life. Or he did until a stranger sold him a threadbare - and disagreeable - magic carpet. Now Abdullah is caught in the middle of his grand daydreams. Waking one night in a luxurious garden, he meets and falls instantly in love with the beautiful and clever Flower-in-the-Night. But a wicked djinn sweeps the princess away right before Abdullah's eyes, leaving the young man no choice but to follow. This is no ordinary quest, however, for Flower-in-the-Night isn't all the djinn has stolen. Abdullah will have the so-called help of the cantankerous carpet, a cranky genie in a bottle, a dishonest soldier, and a very opinionated black cat. Will this motley crew be able to find the djinn's mysterious dwelling and rescue a castle full of princesses?

My Thoughts on the Book:

As you might know, Howl's Moving Castle is one of my most fav books, but I never seemed to get around to reading Castle in the Air & House of Many Ways, but I decided it was time :) So, I re-read Howl's Moving Castle, fell in love with it all over again, and delved into this one :) And I absolutely loved it :) Castle in the Air although might not be as amazing as its predecessor (not many books are), it's still an amazing magical book that will take you on an adventure.
In Castle in the Air we meet Abdullah.  He's a young carpet merchant that works in the Bazaar in the city of Zanzib, and loves to daydream. Everything changes for him when he buys a flying carpet. Suddenly all of his daydreams start to come true, and the prophecy made on Abdullah's birth starts to come true, too. He meets Flower-in-the-Night, they fall in love & before they elope, she's abducted by a djinn, but no one believes him, so Abdullah decides to save her himself.
I won't go into more details about the story, because anything more would be full of spoilers, but I'll say that he goes on quite an adventure (think Arabian Nights), and meets lots of different characters, and he ends up in Ingary (yay). I loved all of the characters, they were just so fun & hilarious, I laughed out loud so many times on what they said & did, as well as the story itself, it was highly entertaining & magical & adorable, and had lots of twists & turns, I definitely didn't saw that coming :) Also, I know I would love re-reading this, knowing now some things I didn't when reading this for the first time! And the ending was lovely & sweet & perfect :) And we got to meet again so many of my fav characters from Howl's Moving Castle, and it was so delightful to see them again & see how they are doing, although I was bummed we didn't saw Michael, too. As for the new characters, I loved Abdullah, Jamal & his dog, as well as Flower-in-the-Night.
If you've tried Diana Wynne Jones's books, then you know she's a master when it comes to her writing style, as well as her imagination. So, if you love magical fantasy fairy-tale-like books, full of adorable & hilarious characters, that will take you on an adventure, then this is a must-read for you & I can't recommend it enough! Also, I love it that it's actually suitable for all ages, I know I would've adored this when I was a little girl, and I'd definitely read this for my children, too! So, yeah, I highly recommend this book, as well as the complete trilogy!

#231 - "Howl's Moving Castle" by Diana Wynne Jones

Title: Howl's Moving Castle
Author: Diana Wynne Jones
Series: Howl's Castle, Book 1

Summary:
In the land of Ingary, such things as spells, invisible cloaks, and seven-league boots were everyday things. The Witch of the Waste was another matter.
After fifty years of quiet, it was rumored that the Witch was about to terrorize the country again. So when a moving black castle, blowing dark smoke from its four thin turrets, appeared on the horizon, everyone thought it was the Witch. The castle, however, belonged to Wizard Howl, who, it was said, liked to suck the souls of young girls.
The Hatter sisters--Sophie, Lettie, and Martha--and all the other girls were warned not to venture into the streets alone. But that was only the beginning.
In this giant jigsaw puzzle of a fantasy, people and things are never quite what they seem. Destinies are intertwined, identities exchanged, lovers confused. The Witch has placed a spell on Howl. Does the clue to breaking it lie in a famous poem? And what will happen to Sophie Hatter when she enters Howl's castle?

My thoughts on the book:
I have only one word for it: AMAZING! I loved it & I don't know what I've been waiting for until now. I have to admit that I first saw the animated movie & I loved it, but after reading the book, I'm blown away. Although the basic plot & storyline is the same, there are a lot of differencies between them & the book is 10 times better! It's fun, sweet, hilarious, with interesting, fun & lovable characters and a few twists. I loved everything about it & if someone asks me now who's my favourite wizard, the answer definitely will be Howl. Definitely one of my favorite book, which I'll read again & again. This was the first book by Diana Wynne Jones I've read and I'm looking forward to read more of her! I highly recommend it if you still haven't read it.
