#234 - "North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell

Title: North and South
Author: Elizabeth Gaskell

Summary:
Margaret is compelled to move from Helstone, her beloved childhood home in the New Forest, to Darkshire in the industrial north when her father resigns his parsonage owing to religious doubts.
When she first encounters John Thornton, her father's pupil and a man in favour of the power of master over worker, she finds their views in conflict.
But industrial rebellion and family tragedy cause Margaret to learn the realities of urban life and Thornton to learn humanity. Only then can a mutual understanding lead to the possibility of enduring love.

Mrs Gaskell's finest social novel is also the powerfully moving story of the developing relationship between southern-born Margaret Hale and John Thornton, the young northern mill-owner.

My rating: 4.5 of 5

My thoughts on the book:
I finally read it & I loved it! It's been over 5 years since I first watched the BBC mini series North and South and I fell in love with the story, but I just kept postponing reading the book until now. The book is different than the mini series, although the main story is the same, but there are different scenes.  The book only made me love the characters of Margaret Hale & John Thornton even more. I recommend it!

Title: City of Bones
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: Mortal Instruments, Book 1

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . .

#231 - "Howl's Moving Castle" by Diana Wynne Jones

    Title: Howl's Moving Castle
    Author: Diana Wynne Jones
    Series: Howl's Castle, Book 1

    Summary:
In the land of Ingary, such things as spells, invisible cloaks, and seven-league boots were everyday things. The Witch of the Waste was another matter.
After fifty years of quiet, it was rumored that the Witch was about to terrorize the country again. So when a moving black castle, blowing dark smoke from its four thin turrets, appeared on the horizon, everyone thought it was the Witch. The castle, however, belonged to Wizard Howl, who, it was said, liked to suck the souls of young girls.
The Hatter sisters--Sophie, Lettie, and Martha--and all the other girls were warned not to venture into the streets alone. But that was only the beginning.
In this giant jigsaw puzzle of a fantasy, people and things are never quite what they seem. Destinies are intertwined, identities exchanged, lovers confused. The Witch has placed a spell on Howl. Does the clue to breaking it lie in a famous poem? And what will happen to Sophie Hatter when she enters Howl's castle?

    My thoughts on the book:
I have only one word for it: AMAZING! I loved it & I don't know what I've been waiting for until now. I have to admit that I first saw the animated movie & I loved it, but after reading the book, I'm blown away. Although the basic plot & storyline is the same, there are a lot of differencies between them & the book is 10 times better! It's fun, sweet, hilarious, with interesting, fun & lovable characters and a few twists. I loved everything about it & if someone asks me now who's my favourite wizard, the answer definitely will be Howl. Definitely one of my favorite book, which I'll read again & again. This was the first book by Diana Wynne Jones I've read and I'm looking forward to read more of her! I highly recommend it if you still haven't read it.

    I Will by Lisa Kleypas:
Andrew, Lord Drake, has been cut out of his father's will because of his dissolute manner of living. To be reinstated, Andrew decides to pretend that he has changed his wicked ways. As part of his plan, he wants to convince his father that he is courting a respectable woman with the intention of marrying her. The problem is, he doesn't know any decent women, except for his friend's spinster sister, Miss Caroline Hargreaves. He blackmails the reluctant Caroline into helping him, and so the charade begins . . .

Puddings, Pastries, and Thou by Lisa Cach:

Richard Brent has all but given up hope that a decent, loving woman will have him. He has enough stains upon his public character that he is barely tolerated in genteel homes, and then only because he comes from a good family. When he meets Vivian, his last flickers of hope are stirred to life, for she is the one woman he has met whose hungers may tempt her to take his bait .

    My thoughts on the book:
This was ok book! It starts good, but after that, doesn't deliver. The main character was really whiny & annoying. I understand that he has a lot of problems, but I couldn't even feel sorry for him the way he was acting. I didn't like him & overall the storyline was nothing special! It was missing a lot in the mystery & suspense department.  I actually can't understand how this book is bestseller. So, ok book, but a little boring & I don't recommend it!
