Book Beginnings on Friday #3

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence. Join this meme HERE!

Although I know that I should share only the first sentence, I decided to share the first passage as well! The Painted Man was one of my favorite reads last year & now I'm re-reading it & I find it hard to put it down just like the first time & I love it just as much!

"The great horn sounded. Arlen paused in his work, looking up at the lavender wash of the dawn sky. Morning mist still clung to the air, bringing with its damp an acrid taste that was all too familiar. A quiet dread built in his gut as he waited in the morning stillness, hoping that it had been his imagination. He was eleven years old."
