"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Title: The Great Gatsby

Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald

Language Edition: Macedonian

(Book read from borrowed copy from February 24-26, 2013.)

Summary:

Generally considered to be F. Scott Fitzgerald's finest novel, The Great Gatsby is a consummate summary of the 'roaring twenties' and a devastating exposé of the shallowness of the 'Jazz Age'. Through the narration of Nick Carraway, the reader is taken into the superficially glittering world of the mansions which lined the Long Island shore in the 1920's, to encounter Nick's cousin Daisy, her brash but wealthy husband Tom Buchanan, Jay Gatsby and the dark mystery which surrounds him.

The Great Gatsby is an undisputed classic of American literature from the period following the First World War, and is one of the great novels of the twentieth century.

My Thoughts on the Book:

This is the first time I've read The Great Gatsby. I haven't even watched any movie adaptation, but of course I've known about this book for years. I'm probably not the only one that does this when it comes to the classics, keeps postponing them, because it's a classic & we can read it any time ;) at least that's what I do! Anyway, I didn't delve into it with any expectations, and I enjoyed it a lot. Actually, there wasn't anything that I disliked in this book, I think it was a great story with interesting flawed characters, that kept me wrapped in it until I finished it
I won't say that I absolutely loved it, I just can't say that, I can't even rate it (and that never happens), but as I said there wasn't anything that I didn't like about it! The translation was good, but I guess the well-praised prose of the author got lost in the translation, that happens sometimes, so I guess I should've read the original. Still, I see why this novel is a classic & why Gatsby is called one of the most tragic characters in literature. Anyway, do I recommend The Great Gatsby? Definitely - I think it's a classic that anyone would enjoy, and I'm glad I finally read it!
