So, My Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me NOT Pick Up A Book are:
#1 - Love Triangle
I really, really don't like them, so I avoid books with them. But, I hate it even more when there is a love triangle, and it's not hinted of it at all in the description. I mean, was that supposed to be a pleasant surprise? Seriously? So, yeah, I like knowing what I get into before I start a book, and sometimes although I know there's a love triangle, I'll still pick it up & give it a shot, although that's quite rare. And I especially hate it when they're there only to be there, without a point, and the book could've been good & better without it. It's rare when a love triangle is done well & it contributes to the story, especially in YA.
#2 - New Adult
Ok, seriously, if I want to read erotica, I will! I'm not saying that every NA book is filled with lots of sex, I haven't read that many, but those I have, they were like that & I felt that I was reading erotica & I didn't enjoy them, and it seems that most of them are like that. It was all sex, sex, sex. I guess people are under wrong impression that only BDSM & 50 Shades look-alikes are erotica, but that's not true, and I guess they're ok thinking I'm reading NA not steamy adult romance that's bordering on erotica (or it's practically erotica), so I look at it as an excuse they give to themselves. I know that probably not all of them are like that, and I have a few well-praised NA books that seems everyone have enjoyed & I'm planning to try, but yeah, for now, I definitely stay away from NA.
#3 - Angels / Fallen Angels
What I find weird is that I love books featuring demons, but I'm not a fan of books with angels & fallen angels, but since often they're connected, I end up reading books with angels ;) But, to be honest, I'm not a fan, and I don't think I ever will be. I can think of only 2 books with angels that I was (and still am) totally in love with, and both are adult, and written long before the angels craze.
#4 - YA Books Based on Greek Mythology
I'm just so tired of these, especially when it comes to the Persephone myth & the Furies. I actually love mythology based books, but only when they're not all about the romance, but more about the adventure, and there's more to them than the romance, so yeah, mythology in YA - almost always I stay away.
#5 - Twilight Fans Will Love It! - or something similar
Ok, seriously, is that supposed to be some kind of recommendation? NOT! Also, I'm not a fan of the other book series uses like that - like Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, etc, especially when they're nothing like them, although I honestly don't want them to be like them.
#6 - Incest
I just can't read about this. I can (and do) read almost all genres, since I can mostly get into any story, as long as the story & the characters are captivating, but I don't want to get wrapped up in a story like this, so thanks, but, no thanks.
#7 - Adultery
Same here, I don't like reading about adultery. It's not that I never have read a book about it, I probably have at some point, but it's not a theme that attracts me when it comes to my reading taste.
#8 - Self-Help Books
Yeah, I don't read them, and I don't think I'll ever will. I guess they do help someone (hopefully), but I just think they're silly.
#9 - Teacher/Student Relationships
Thanks, but no thanks. I don't think there should be any explanation for this.
#10 - Christian Novels with Lots of Praying in them
Ok, so first of all, I am a Christian. But, I really, really don't like when the characters start praying to God in books again & again. I find it silly, and I keep rolling my eyes at them. This happens in Christian fiction, mostly romances. I mean, I knew what I was reading, but I wanted to try it, and although I might have found the story overall cute & fun & the characters likable, the praying diminished my enjoyment, and after the last time when I totally loved this YA book at first, but then it all went down the hill with the praying, and in the end I didn't love it anymore, I decided to mostly stay away from them. I actually enjoy reading books with religion, I don't mind them, as I said I can pretty much read & enjoy almost anything, but not this type of books.
What about you?
Leave me your TTT links!
I also don't do self-help or cheating. They suck.

I'm not fond of these topics either. They are either tedious, disturbing, or both. My literary turnoff... sparkling vampires! That adds on to "Twilight fans loving it," because that's more of a kiss of death than an endorsement unless you're a "Twi-Hard."
ReplyDeleteHahahaha exactly! If that's what it says on the book, I'll probably skip it :)
DeleteI almost put self help books on my life. I have glanced through some before and found them helpful... which surprises me! I didn't even realize I had read any till I thought about it!

My Top Ten
:) I'm glad they were helpful :)
DeleteDefinitely agree with you on 7, 8 and 10 and I think I might agree with you about NA novels (although I haven't read enough of them to really judge this yet).
ReplyDeleteYou can find my TTT here.
Yeah, as I said, I will still give a few more a shot, I'm not giving up on NA yet, but my experience so far - not good.
DeleteNice! Seeing #5 now a bit! And I totally agree, I didn't care for Twilight despite reading all 4 books. I think the movies and buzz/obsession wore down on me and I loathed it by movie 2! I wanted to lol at a moment where Bella was really upset and I knew I was done!
ReplyDelete1, 2, 3 & 4 are all tricky for me. I can endure a love triangle if it's done okay. But yeah, don't usually go looking for them.
New adult, is a little hit or miss. I've read a few of them so far and liked them. Those haven't had too much over the top sex for me, so that was good! Even thinking of categorizing my book as a New Adult when I get there. Don't worry, mine doesn't have a lot of sex in it! I don't like books like that either.
Angels/Fallen angels are sort of hit or miss for me as well. Although I've read a few and have enjoyed them. Sometimes though when I start a series I feel obligated to finish it and usually there's enough going on that I do want to finish it too.
Greek mythology reads I do tend to like, but there has been an overflow of them recently. Which normally would be fine but like you mentioned they all tend to be the Persephone myth and I am a little burnt out on that one!
Nice picks!!
Here's my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!

Exactly, so Twilight fans will love it is not a recommendation :)
DeleteMe, too, for #1, but it's so rare when it's done well.
Cool, I'm definitely interested in reading your book, even if it is NA :D I still haven't given up on the genre, I'll have to read a few more, from the more popular ones, so decide then, but so far, I'm not a fan.
Me, too, especially since they're not good. I mean, I loved Of Poseidon and the mythology in it, but it was great there, but the other ones I tried I really, really didn't like.
Thanks for stopping by!
I get sick and bored of the love triangles, I'm not much into mythology either especially in young adult for some reason... I don't like Christian fiction or angels/fallen angels (especially when it's portrayed as something else in the blurb and you're taken completely by surprise.. that happened to me not to long ago and it's one of the rare books I've HATED.) I expected an urban fantasy with mystery, not a angel/fallen angel romance -_-
ReplyDeleteGood list!
Yeah, I know what you mean :) I love mythology in adult books, but usually in YA it's just not as good, and I hate when the blurb is misleading.
DeleteHUGE no to incest and adultery books. No, just no. They are both huge turnsoffs in so many levels.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! :D
My TTT
Definitely! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteUgh, yeah it's frustrating to me that New Adult just basically seems to have been created for people who wanted sex in their YA books because the protags are only just a bit older than YA age. Just not interested. And I'm totally with you for your explanations on disliking love triangles and books that are "the next Twilight/HP/THG"!
ReplyDeleteExactly :D Thanks for stopping by!
