"The Hound of the Baskervilles" by Arthur Conan Doyle

Title: The Hound of the Baskervilles

Author: Arthur Conan Doyle

Series: Sherlock Holmes #5

My rating: 4 of 5

(Book read from August 15th to August 23rd, 2012.)

Summary:

They all agreed that it was a huge creature, luminous, ghastly and spectral.

Originally serialized in the Strand Magazine, Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles follows the infamous Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson as they investigate the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville, whose body is found on the misty and desolate Devon moors. The locals blame his death on the legend of the fearsome phantom hound that they claim has haunted the Baskerville family for generations. Holmes’ detective skills are out to the test as he battles to discover the truth behind the legend and to solve one of the most macabre mysteries of his career.

My Thoughts on the Book:

Ok, so this was the first Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes novel I've read. I've tried twice before (unsuccessfully) to read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which was a collection of stories, and A Study in Scarlet, I read it half, but just couldn't get into it, and I gave up on both of these, but I'm nothing if not determined, so I decided to try one of the more popular ones - The Hound of the Baskervilles. So, what did I thought?
It was quite good and I enjoyed it a lot. Although technically I haven't read any of the books until now, since I was a little girl, I loved watching Sherlock Holmes movies & tv series, so I was already a fan of the character of Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle have definitely created one of the most interesting & complex detectives in fiction.
But, I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of his writing style. It's definitely hard to get into, that's why I had trouble getting into two of his books before. Still, after getting into it, I enjoyed it a lot. It's a really good mystery that will keep you entertained, so I'm glad I finally read it.
Ok, so this won't be really a review, I don't think a classic like this one should be reviewed, but will I read it again? Maybe. Will I read another Sherlock Holmes book? Probably.
So, do I recommend this book? Yes. If you're a fan of classic detective stories, and like me you still haven't read this one, I recommend it.

  2. I haven't read anything by Doyle either, but I have several books on my TBR list. I don't know if I'll manage to squeeze one in this year, but it's on my 5 yr Classics list!!
